The Preble Street response to the SNAP crisis

Less than two weeks ago, on Friday, October 24, 2025, Preble Street hosted the Grand Opening of our new Food Security Hub. We hoped that we would have more time to ramp up now that all of the equipment is in place — to refine our recipes and processes and add more staff to meet the food needs of Mainers.  But our new 5,000 square foot industrial kitchen and giant walk-in cooler and freezer gives us greatly expanded capacity to make a bigger impact. So, we’re starting right now and will continue to build our response to this crisis.

Double daily meal production
With current staffing and increased volunteers, we are working to able to cook up to 2,600 meals a day
Provide housed clients receiving SNAP with meals and groceries
These clients include Veterans, youth in transitional housing, survivors of trafficking, and families
Advocate relentlessly for full SNAP funding
Even if funds are released today, families, older adults, Veterans, and more will feel the impacts until the new year

Immediate impacts:

  • Preble Street chefs, Food Security Hub staff, and volunteers are working to double the daily number of nutritious meals ready to eat from our kitchen. We will be ramping up to cook 2,400-2,600 meals SEVEN DAYS A WEEK to help more of our neighbors have food on the table.
  • Most of the individuals living in our permanent supportive housing programs that we operate in partnership with Avesta Housing receive SNAP and other emergency food benefits. We will be sending prepared meals and expanding the number of grocery boxes delivered directly to those facilities to ensure tenants, all of whom have disabilities and the long-term effects of chronic homelessness, have enough to eat.
  • Preble Street helped more than 500 Veterans, youth in transitional housing, survivors of trafficking, families and more secure housing this year. They are all at increased risk of hunger without the restoration of SNAP benefits by the White House. Food Programs is partnering with our caseworkers to ensure that these individuals and families receive additional prepared meals and grocery boxes to meet their needs during this crisis.
  • Alongside the Hunger Free Maine coalition and others, we are advocating relentlessly for the USDA to immediately release the $5 billion in SNAP contingency funds to avoid children, older adults, Veterans, and families going hungry without their November benefits.

Short-term plans:

  • We’ve already received several requests from current partners to expand food access to the people they serve, including older adults, children, and people living in affordable housing developments. We will do our best to ensure that we make the most impact with the resources we have.

Longer-term plans:

  • The Food Security Hub Kitchen is fully equipped to make up to 10,000 meals every day, and our freezer can store up to 50,000 meals. We hope that this current crisis will resolve before we need to scale up to this level, but we are working to reach these numbers much sooner than we envisioned.

Take action and resources:

  • Find a food pantry to assist families in need: https://www.gsfb.org/food-map/
  • Contact USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins today to insist that the government immediately release the available SNAP contingency funds; phone: 202-720–3631, email: rollins@usda.gov
  • Send a thank you to Senators Collins, King, and Representative Pingree and ask them to continue fighting for SNAP contingency funds to be released.

How you can help during the SNAP crisis

While programs like the Preble Street Food Security Hub and food pantries across the country are here to support people experiencing food insecurity, we cannot come close to replacing the food supply and dollar value that SNAP provides. SNAP is the biggest and most efficient tool to fight hunger. For every meal that food banks

A bold step forward in the fight against hunger

“This place is just amazing. And thank goodness it’s ready for business. The timing for the opening of this Food Security Hub could not be better. With federal cuts to emergency food assistance and healthcare chipping away at the safety nets that help many people in our community stay fed, healthy, and housed, we collectively need
