Letter from Swannie: Spring/Summer 2025

Relentless. It’s a word that I often use when talking about how Preble Street approaches its work and commitment to the vulnerable people we serve and care about.

This year – our 50th year – being relentless is more important than ever. We remain committed to our mission, our values, and to working towards a more equitable world. We will continue to be relentless and fight for solutions.

Cutting direct resources and programs for people experiencing poverty, homelessness, or hunger is not a solution. It leads to more hungry kids, more people suffering on our streets, and more families struggling to pay rent or the heating bill or buy the most basic groceries.

Balancing federal, state, or local budgets by cutting services for the most vulnerable is not the right thing to do, nor is it efficient. The money spent on police and emergency services goes up. Communities suffer. People can’t get the help they need to overcome challenges in their lives.

Today, I’m asking all of you – friends, volunteers, donors, partners, funders, former interns and staff – to stand up and stand together with us. Be relentless. Advocate for human rights for everyone. Every human life has value.

I hope that you’ll join us on Tuesday, June 17, at Brick South on Thompson’s Point in Portland to celebrate the impacts that Preble Street has had in Maine these past 50 years and help launch the next 50 years of being relentless.

Thank you for being a part of Preble Street; the past 50 years would not have been possible without the support and LOVE of
people like you.

Peace,
Swannie
