Who was Joe?
Joe Kreisler founded Preble Street in 1975. A professor at the University of Southern Maine School of Social Work, Joe started the agency as a real-world training ground for students and a place for Portland’s most vulnerable residents to get help meeting their needs and advocating for change.

Joe dedicated his life to addressing the needs of disenfranchised people and was the embodiment of the agency’s mission, philosophy, spirit, and dedication to meeting everyone as an equal human being.
Becoming a Friend of Joe honors his vision to provide accessible, barrier-free services empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
How can I pause or cancel my gift?
You can pause or cancel your gift at any time. Call our office at (207) 775-0026 or use our contact form to let us know of your wishes. A member of our fundraising team will usually respond within 48 hours (excluding holidays and weekends). You will receive an email confirmation as soon as your monthly gift is paused or cancelled.
How can I change my monthly gift amount
Thank you for your commitment to providing needed services to our most vulnerable neighbors! To change your gift amount, please call our office at (207) 775-0026 or use our contact form to let us know what amount you would like to give monthly.
A member of our fundraising team will usually respond within 48 hours (excluding holidays and weekends). You will receive an email confirmation as soon as your gift has been updated.
What is the best way to make my monthly donation?
Recurring monthly gifts can be made through direct debit from your bank account or by using your credit/debit card. Direct debit gifts tend to have fewer processing fees and are preferred.
How do I update the credit card information for my monthly gift?
To securely change your credit card, please call our office at (207) 775-0026 or use our secure Update My Gift form.
When you update your card using our update form, your new card will be charged on the day you make the update.
Is my gift tax deductible?
Preble Street is a 501(c)(3) organization, and gifts are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law.
When will I get a gift receipt?
Gift receipts are mailed in January detailing your giving during the previous calendar year. If you need a receipt at another time, please complete our contact form, and be sure to let us know how you would like the receipt to be sent.
Can my gift be matched by my employer?
Maybe! If your employer has a matching gift program your gift could go twice as far.

Is my data secure?
We take your data privacy seriously. Our online donation forms are powered by Blackbaud, a trusted nonprofit technology provider. All transactions are encrypted using industry-standard SSL to protect your personal and payment information.
We do not store credit card numbers on our servers. Payment data is processed securely through PCI-compliant systems, ensuring your information stays private and protected.
Preble Street will not sell, share or trade our donors’ names or personal information with any other entity, nor send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations.
