All we can say about the June Volunteer(s) of the Month is we “Lovett” when they’re here!
This month, Preble Street is highlighting not one but two volunteers: EJ and Lynne Lovett.
Earlier this year, EJ returned to cooking breakfast at the Resource Center Soup Kitchen after a few years away. No one makes breakfast like EJ — from smiley-face pancakes to perfectly fried eggs on top of homefries, EJ does it all (with a smile!). “He has such passion and talent for cooking — it is very inspiring,” says Preble Street Food Programs Supervisor Katherine Howe.
EJ’s wife Lynne soon started volunteering again as well. Lynne’s innate ability to connect with everyone in the moment completely bowls us over. Her compassion is magic.
When one day helping out in the Resource Center Soup Kitchen wasn’t enough, EJ decided to help prepare meals at the Florence House Soup Kitchen as well. Florence House kitchen staff Philippa says, “Every Friday morning I leave him with a stack of ingredients and a few half-baked ideas, and then I arrive to see he’s been cooking up something delicious.” On Friday evenings, Lynne joins EJ at Florence House to serve dinner.
The joy EJ and Lynne spread while volunteering is captivating. Friends they’ve brought to volunteer with them have since become regular volunteers. EJ and Lynne remind us the soup kitchen does more than feed people — it forges relationships.
Unsurprisingly, staff agree that if EJ and Lynne were a food, they would be blueberry pancakes, perfectly cooked to EJ’s technical expertise, sweet, tangy, and vibrant for Lynne’s captivating personality, and sweet to the last bite.
Thank you, EJ and Lynne, for sharing your many gifts and talents with staff and clients at Preble Street!
