adult day shelter

In a world full of computers, cell phones, iPods, and DVDs, we can easily overlook how many people don’t have even the most basic things we take for granted.

Imagine if you didn’t have a home. You wouldn’t have a shower, a phone, or a refrigerator.  You wouldn’t have a place to store your clothes or get your mail.

Imagine:

A place where we can
repeat in our memories
the fun times;
The times and times we didn't get a chance to know.
For it is the place I go when I feel the need to know.
For when I walk away
I am glad to say
this wall is for you and
I can come everyday.

  • not having clean socks or underwear.
  • having no place to brush your teeth.
  • trying to find a job while carrying everything you own around on your back

For hundreds of adults and families living in the most severe poverty the Adult Day Shelter is the only place they can find safety, warmth, and hope.  The only place they can turn for a warm coat, a shower, a telephone . . . or a chance to make a better life for themselves.

Located at the Preble Street Resource Center, the Day Shelter is the hub of services for hundreds of homeless people in Portland—meeting urgent needs at an on-site clothing closet, soup kitchen, and food pantry; coordinating hours with the City of Portland Men’s Shelter, a block away on Oxford Street, and the Preble Street Women’s Shelter that occupies the Day Shelter space at night; and providing direct access to the healthcare clinic and casework services.

Hearing their stories, acknowledging their struggles, offering community, resources, and encouragement, the Day Shelter staff empowers people to manage the crises in their lives and connect to services that can help them identify and solve the long-term problems that have deprived them of their health and well-being.

Day shelter case workers help individuals assess their circumstances and develop plans to achieve their goals. They also make referrals to other human service agencies, coordinate services, and mediate between individuals and service providers.
