ADULTS & FAMILY SERVICES
Day Shelter
For 200-300 individuals and families every day, the Day Shelter at the Resource Center provides a warm, welcoming atmosphere and meets basic immediate needs, such as:
- Bathrooms, showers, and laundry
- Clothing and personal hygiene items
- Telephones and mailboxes
- Storage space
In addition, the Day Shelter creates the opportunity for Preble Street staff to help identify the long-term problems that lead to homelessness and connect people to services healthcare, housing, job training, education, mental healthcare, counseling, and legal assistance, etc. that will help them find a way to take care of themselves and their loved ones.
Day shelter case workers help individuals assess their circumstances and develop plans to achieve their goals. They also make referrals to other human service agencies, coordinate services, and mediate between individuals and service providers.
21 human service agencies visit the Resource Center to offer services such as mental health and psychiatry, family planning, and transitional housing.
One of Preble Street´s most successful private/public partnerships is the Homeless Healthcare Clinic where the City of Portland Public Health Division provides the only free walk-in health clinic available to homeless people.
The Homeless Healthcare Clinic not only provides general medical care but also coordinates referrals to specialists and provides mental health and substance abuse services and one of only ten Respite Care Programs in the nation for homeless persons discharged from medical facilities without a place to recover.
Unity Village
Preble Street partners with local private and public entities to advocate for and support housing initiatives that meet the needs of our clients. One successful partnership is with the developers and owners of a 33-unit, mixed-income housing development in our Bayside Neighborhood. Unity Village maintains seven units for homeless and low-income residents, and a social worker from Preble Street works with those tenants to ensure residential stability and success.
Logan Place
Another important housing partnership exists with Avesta Housing, which has developed and owns 30 affordable efficiency apartments in Portland for adults with a history of long term homelessness. At Logan Place, Preble Street provides round-the-clock social work staff to provide links to resources to support independence.
